Isolate a blanket or blanket
Hold the insulation firmly between the ceiling joists, without pressure. If the crane area is not 16 or 24 inches (400 or 600 mm), trim the bats to fit the space or use a loose insulation.

Pat ends together as comfortably as possible.
The bats should cover the top plate of the exterior wall but not block ventilation. To maintain airflow, leave a space of 38 to 50 mm (1 1/2 to 2 inches) between the top of the insulation and the underside of the roof sheathing. Use baffles between each space of the rafters to prevent them from becoming clogged (see Figure 5-11).

Insulate, split, or cut the top and bottom of the cross brace to accommodate the cross brace as shown in Figure 5-12. Instead, cut one piece into a series of pegs and then wedge a wedge under each strut. In either method, do not compress the insulation.

The first layer of bats should be thick enough to fill the top of the crane space. The second layer can then be run vertically across the joists to prevent any heat flow through and around the joists (see Fig. 5-13). Ensure that there are no gaps between the two layers of insulation.
Fill in any awkward gaps or gaps with pieces of batting or with a loose filler.
Apply an insulating layer the same way as bats. It may be pre-cut with a knife or cut on the spot. Start at one end of the attic and open the blanket
Isolate bulk packing
Bulk packing insulator can be manually poured or blown over the air and vapor barrier to a depth greater than the height of the joists. A homeowner can do the job using rented equipment or a qualified contractor.
Before adding insulation, place sufficient depth indicators for the nails (for example, a piece of wood held perpendicular to the crane) or mark highly visible lines on the truss members so that you can easily see and measure the depth of the insulation. Maintain an even depth throughout the attic by leveling the insulation with a clapboard or garden rake (see Figure 5-14).
Fill in all the nooks and crannies.
In the eaves, do not block the ventilation. Prevent insulation from disappearing into the eaves space by installing a piece of solid sandwich panels or a wooden partition before work begins. Building supply stores sell cardboard or foam barriers that can be stapled between the rafters (see Figure 5-11). Make sure the insulation extends far enough to cover the top of the outer wall.
If the bulk filling is deeper than the joists, build an insulating frame (bed) around the attic opening so that it can be filled to the edge (see Figure 4-7).
The insulating material bags will list the number of square meters (or square feet) each bag must cover to provide the required RSI. Calculate attic area to help determine how many bags will be required. |
